The Two of Wands: happy dreams of a wider world

Our Two of Wands shows a cat who dreams of wider - and perhaps more romantic - horizons

The traditional Rider Waite Smith Tarot (RWS) Two of Wands and Three of Wands are somewhat odd cards. To many people they seem a little mundane and also rather similar to one another. Yet to other readers, they are among the most romantic images in the deck, showing characters who are ready to dream, hope and plan for new adventures and creative endeavours.

In designing this card, we wanted to emphasise these more romantic and optimistic aspects. As the cards in The Bohemian Cats’ Theatre Tarot all show the performances and behind-stage life of a feline theatrical troupe (you will hear more of this), we imagined the scene to be set in a rather charming play. The young heroine finds herself standing on a civilised terrace, but looking out at wild mountains and holding an astronomical globe, which may promise exciting events to come. With a far-away look in her eyes, she is most definitely daring to dream.

You can clearly see the influence of the RWS card on our design – the mountains and the globe are similar, and the enclosing castle ramparts have become a more domestic, but still “protective” balustrade.

Throughout The Bohemian Cats’ Theatre Tarot, we have decided not to usually show the Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles/Coins. However, we do suggest the attributes of each suit in our images, so here, the pretty parasol handle acts as a reminder of the two wands in the RWS card.

The dress was made from a vintage bolt of kimono silk – we use a lot of vintage Japanese silk because it’s such very beautiful fabric and this particular piece had a wonderful gleam that caught the light when photographed.

As ever, the embroidery is our own, designed and stitched in the studio on our trusty embroidery machine. The lace is actually also made on the same machine. Once we realised that it’s possible to make lace this way – by stitching onto film – we used it for several costumes.
